A Holiday Guide to Toy Eye Safety

The holidays are upon us which means Erector Sets for some, and Barbie dolls for others. Well intentioned grandparents love surprising the favorite little ones with the ''in'' toys for the holiday season.
It is crucial that family members advise others about some guidelines about safe and age appropriate toys. Injuries involving toys may occur, sometimes causing damaged vision.

Here are a few guidelines to guard children from toy related injury:

  1. Only buy gifts which are developmentally suitable. Be careful not to allow little children to play with toys made for older siblings.

  2. Check that the toy is made of strong, durable material and avoid toys with sharp corners. Make sure stick toys such as bats or pony sticks have rounded surfaces.

  3. Keep an eye on young children when they play.

  4. Prevent eye injuries by steering clear of any toys or games with points, spikes, rods or firing projectiles like BB guns.

Before giving in and buying the popular toy or game that your child has been itching for, take a minute to read toy safety guidelines. Anyone who has ever watched ''A Christmas Story'' should have learned that already. Happy Holidays.
