When the spring arrives, as well as a greater chance to engage in a new set of sports, comes a rise in the number of sports related eye injuries. Every year, many children and adults suffer eye injuries as a result of sport play that could easily be prevented with suitable protection. Guarding your eyes while participating in sports is particularly important in contact sports or those that expose you to the sun's rays such as field hockey, baseball, lacrosse, squash, boxing, volleyball, or fishing.

Lower your risk of a sports eye injury by investing in the appropriate protective eyewear best suited for the activity you might be involved in. Protective eyewear will keep you safe from injury and will often also have lenses that block harmful ultra-violet light for outdoor play. Sports eyewear is designed to protect your eyes from certain conditions. Everyday glasses usually aren't adequate for full protection, meaning that even just a minor hit can turn into an actual risk to eyesight.

Sports and eye safety goes beyond using the right eyewear. Your sight is an important component of how well you play sports, so you must have clear vision. If you ordinarily wear eyeglasses, you'll need protective sports glasses or goggles with a prescription to make it easier to be safe. If you're fitted with contacts, you might need a slightly different lens than the ones you normally wear. Contact your optometrist about the choices that are right for you.

Each sport has a range of dangers and demands, so it's important to allow your eye care professional to identify your specific needs and fit you with the correct eyeglasses or lenses that best fit your vision. This is key in helping you gain the winning edge you need to succeed and have fun safely.

All sports have differing needs and risks, so it's important to allow your eye care professional to determine your unique needs and provide the correct glasses or contact lenses to maximize your visual skills. This will only help you give you the boost you need to succeed and have fun and be safe when you play sports.
